There are many "selves" we carry with us. For example there is the false self, the true self and the shadow self. Most people believe their false self is the true self, but it is a "self" deception because the false self is full of terms like "should have" or "could have". It’s the self that outside influence tells us we should be. And guilt is the result so the individual suppresses these seemingly undesirable qualities that society or peer pressure or our parents tells us are bad. These traits and qualities get shoved down into the subconscious in the form of the shadow self.
The shadow self contains the parts of us that we have deemed undesirable because of outside societal pressure. It is our lusts, perversions, hate etc. It is those parts of us that we have become ashamed of for one reason or another to be replaced with a false sense of obligation to others. The false self is that obligation, the face we present to the world. Examples of this fractured self would include a person that is homosexual but in the closet because of fear of rejection or ridicule. Or it could be as simple as being invited to a party and accepting the invitation even though you truly don't want to go. It could be self-deprivation in the form of hating yourself for not going to the gym that day by saying fuck I’m lazy, I “shoulda” gone to the gym.
These are self-deceiving lies though; the individual is being dishonest with themselves. The reality is that they didn't want to go to the party but they did anyway because of a misplaced sense of obligation. They really didn't want to go to the gym today because they would have rather sat on the couch and eaten potato chips. It’s not that they did not have time, they simply did not place going to the gym as a high enough priority in their life to make the time to go. So they just need to admit that to themself and be OK with it. If their true passion is potato chips and not lifting weight then be OK with that, take responsibility for it and be the best potato chip eater they can be. That is the authentic self and it might be ugly sometimes but it is also honest.
Just beneath the surface of the false self is the true self, the loathing of being forced into this behavior through outside pressure. The true self is the real facilitator of order and desire in one’s life through its acknowledgement and subsequent relationship with the shadow. The first goal any aspiring Sith should undertake is to kill the false self and then go in search of the shadow to begin the process of reintegration. This is a place of brutal self-honesty in who they truly are and what they truly want. It’s a place where they explore true feeling and thought and experience and desire with themself and then integrate those into a singly functioning psyche from which to begin the pursuit of passion to create the "monument of your existence". This begins the Siths existence as one that is free of “shouldas” and “couldas” and the guilt. Completing this journey allows the “authentic self” to emerge and that is the source of true will. From there the code can be applied to life and passion pursued in an authentic manner. This is a place of "I will".
