The Animal Meditations
This is a sitting meditation designed to allow yourself to seek out an emotion you have kept hidden in your shadow self; one that you have ignored or been afraid of. So make sure you are comfortable. Begin by using the fourfold breath. The fourfold breath is as follows:
breathe in for 4 counts;
hold breath for 4 counts;
breathe out for 4 counts;
hold breath out for 4 counts.
Only do this once, and then, visualize in space a single point as defined by mathematics, having a place, but consisting of no volume or size; just a point on an empty plane. Once you have successfully done that, you will bring the point "towards" you, and as it comes towards you, it will encompass you and you will find yourself inside it, in a wholly different environment
This might be a desert or woodland or snowy mountain, or anything else. Just go with what shows up. In this environment, you are going to state very clearly, that you are there to meet whatever emotion you are seeking. The first animal that appears in this environment - that will be a representation of that emotion.
You have been very cruel to this animal. You have told it to buck up and get over itself. That is going to change, starting now. You are going to apologize to this animal for being so mean. And you are going to apologize for not listening to what it had to say to you. And you are going to ask it, to please repeat itself, because you are listening this time.
You have tried to suppress it, and all you have succeeded in doing is forcing it underground. Now it is dominating your life, because you never gave it a voice. So you are going to listen to what it has to say, and you are going to treat it the way frightened animals deserve to be treated, with kindness and understanding.
If you can reassure it, you should do so. If you can explain to it kindly why it has no reason to be afraid, you should do that too. You should try to make friends with this animal, so that anytime you feel this emotion stopping you from moving forward, you can ask it, "why?" and listen to what it tells you. This emotion exists to protect you. It is your friend. And you have taught it that it should fear everything, even speaking.
When you start asking why, and asking what it really is afraid of, you might be surprised to learn that your emotion is not unfounded. It is probably the result of old injuries you never took the time to heal properly, just covered them up brusquely and moved on and didn't spend any time recovering from.
That is enough to scare something that is trying to protect you. So, find out what your emotion is really trying to tell you, and afterwards, thank it, and promise you are going to listen to it from now on. The more you listen to it, the more you two will start to work together. It is only out of control because you have taught it that when it behaves well, you ignore it, and hurt yourself, and ignore that too. So now it is roaring at you and you are still not listening. So you will start to listen, and you will end your meditation only after it has said everything it wants to say
The Animal Meditations are very powerful techniques for learning how to work with emotions. It may take a few sessions. You will only be able to get to a comfortable state after you have whittled down your defenses and found precise explanations. This is a method to cut away all the vague "not good enough" to get at "I want to be". This is why what you say matters. You really cannot move forward without a firm starting point
